What is Jay Roach’s ‘Bombshell’ Movie All About?

The idea for Bombshell came in 2017 and by May of that same year, the project was finally announced. The producers of the movies named Jay Roach as the director of the upcoming project on May 22, 2018, due to his professionalism and reputation as an astute director.

The Bombshell movie tells the story of how several women succeeded in bringing down the Chairman/CEO of a powerful news network. Popular American actor, John Lithgow, was named to portray Roger Ailes, the film’s central character and CEO of Fox News.

Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman played the characters of Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson – two of the network’s female employees. From the movie trailer released on October 15, 2019, movie lovers were given a taste of what to expect when the full film comes out.

Bombshell focuses mainly on the various lawsuits filed against the Fox News boss. Is The Bombshell Movie A True Story?

The answer to the above question is a big fat YES. The upcoming film is based on actual events that took place at Fox News Network. It all began in 2016 when Gretchen Carlson, a well-known face at the news network, came across Gabriel Sherman’s book titled The Loudest Voice in the Room.

The book which was a written biography of Roger Ailes spoke of a female producer who claimed that Ailes offered her a pay increment in exchange for sex. Carlson then proceeded to file a lawsuit against Roger Ailes, the then Chairman and CEO of Fox News Network, on allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct.

Gretchen Carlson claimed in the lawsuit that she filed that Roger sabotaged her career by firing her wrongly because she refused his sexual advances. The news anchor went further to claim that Ailes delayed her pay, made her schedule unfavourable for her and even went as far as denying her some hard-hitting interviews before firing her.

It was not long after Carlson sued the company and the founder that another employee of the company, Megyn Kelly, stepped forward with fresh accusations of physical abuse. Carlson and Kelly’s stories inspired confidence in the minds of several other female employees who also came out with similar accusations.

American mainstream media, armed with these allegations and accusations, escalated the whole issue. Roger Ailes, amidst pressure from the board of directors and the media, stepped down as Chairman and CEO of Fox News in 2016. He reportedly received a payout of about $40 million, much to the dislike of already raging women protesting against him.

Fox News reached an out-of-court settlement with Gretchen Carlson. The settlement which was pegged at $20 million included a public apology to be made by the news network. Roger Ailes died on May 18, 2017, a few months after he was diagnosed with haemophilia. The television executive was only 77 at the time of his demise.
