Antoine Griezmann Bio, Age

Antoine Griezmann was born on March 21, 1991, in Mâcon, Saône-et-Loire in France. He was born into a rich home to his father Alain Griezmann, who was a powerful figure within the corridors of power in France and also a town councilor, and his mother Isabelle Griezmann, who used to be a hospital cleaner. He is the second child of the three children of his parents and he has an older sister, Maud Griezmann and a younger brother, Théo Griezmann.

It’s not clear where he obtained his high school education as some reports say it was a high school in Bayonne. We are however certain that he attended one as his father could afford such a necessity but it’s not sure if he attended college. His flair in soccer may be attributed to his ancestry which carries a football heritage.

Antoine Griezmann is of mixed descent as his father has German roots while his mother is of Portuguese ancestry. Her father, Amaro Lopes, was a soccer player who played as a defender for F.C. Paços de Ferreira and the Portuguese national soccer team. Young Griezmann didn’t have the chance to know him very well as his maternal grandfather died while he was still a child.

Career

Antoine Griezmann started his soccer career as a young kid while playing for a small club in his hometown, UF Mâconnais. It is important to note that young Griezmann was very petite in stature and this placed a hindrance in the path of his career for a while. He was always rejected by clubs when he went on trials not because he lacked the necessary skill but because of his miniature size. Several academies of big sides in Europe, including his boyhood club Olympique Lyonnais, gave the same verdict about the burgeoning soccer star.

It was until Montpellier came calling that his fortune changed. While on trial with them (Montpellier), his more impressive performance in a friendly game against a Paris Saint-Germain academy side was enough to convince Spanish LaLiga side, Real Sociedad (who were in relegation at that time) to offer him a trial and then a youth contract in 2005 and that was where destiny began for Antoine Griezmann at age 14. He started off in their youth system before earning promotion in 2009 to the senior team after four years with the youth cadre.

After helping them gain promotion back to LaLiga, he signed a five-year contract with them in April 2010 despite interests from several other big sides across Europe. He would play with Real Sociedad for four more seasons before leaving for top LaLiga side, Atletico Madrid in 2014.

At the national level, Griezmann played for the youth cadres of France national team – U-19, U-20, and U-21 teams – and was even at some point banned from the national team for a year, along with his other three teammates, as a disciplinary measure for a misdemeanor. He even considered switching his allegiance to Portugal, which he was able to do by his maternal ancestry, but while on the thought, he received a call-up to the senior national team on the 27th of February 2014. Antoine Griezman made his debut on March 5, 2014, in a friendly match against the Netherlands which the French team won 2-0. He has represented his country at all major tournaments since then.

Family – Siblings, Brother, Sister

Antoine Griezmann has two siblings – an older sister and a younger brother. His younger brother named Théo Griezmann is also a soccer player and plays for the amateur side, Sporting Mâcon in the Portuguese league. Griezmann is said to be very fond of his kid brother and hopes to be a model and motivation for success as he (Théo) continues to build his soccer career.

His sister, Maud Griezmann serves as his image rights manager but is also lucky to still be alive. She was part of the people held siege by the terrorists that waylaid the Bataclan Theater in the November 2015 Paris terror attacks – an attack that claimed 89 lives and left more than 100 others injured. She says she went to the concert in the company of her boyfriend, Simon Degoul, to watch the Eagles of Death Metal band perform, an episode that has become a near-death experience for her.

Aside from being her younger brother’s agent, the two siblings are awfully close. You may wonder why he let her be his image rights handler and we can tell you that it may not be far from the fact that she supported him in his career choice while they were growing up. She would often play the goalkeeper for him while he practiced his shots. Maud also has a tattoo of Antoine Griezmann birthdate on her.

The Athletico Madrid attacker got married to his longtime girlfriend, Erika Choperena on June 15, 2017, in what could be dubbed a secret wedding as the event was only revealed after the soccer star posted pictures of the event on his Instagram page. He had been dating the Spanish native since 2011 after they met while she was still studying in San Sebastian. Griezmann at the time was plying his soccer trade for Real Sociedad and when he moved to Atletico Madrid in 2014, Choperena followed her sweetheart to the nation’s capital. Their love grew ever stronger and on April 8, 2016, the couple welcomed their first child, a girl, who they named Mia.

He was fined for love in March 2017 by the Spanish FA after he celebrated a goal for his Atletico Madrid side by displaying a message to Erika Choperena which read “Feliz Cumple Gordita” (Happy Birthday Chubby). The gesture attracted a €520 fine.

Erika Choperena is a child psychologist and owned a beauty blog called Cordialmente Erika which she was forced to shut down as her popularity grew as a result of her association with Antoine Griezmann. Choperena enjoys her private space while allowing her celebrity husband to soak all the euphoria of superstardom.

Body Stats – Height, Weight

Griezmann had a small body build at the early days of his career and it almost became a clog in the wheel of his progress. He was rejected by several teams on the basis of his size and that would have cut short his eventual amazing career in soccer. Having grown up, his body frame has now increased and one would doubt he was ever smallish when the story of his early journey is told. As it stands, his body stats are Chest – 38 inches, Biceps – 14 inches, and Waist – 31 inches. His body build is now athletic, thanks to the gym. He is still taller than some footballers with the height of 5 ft 9 in (1.75 m) while his weight is 159 lbs (72 kg).
