Former professional tennis player Andre Agassi is an Olympic gold medalist and eight-time Grand Slam champion, who holds the record as one of the biggest worldwide superstars in the racket sport’s history. Andre, who picked his tennis racket at the age of two, has not only been in the spotlight for so many years for dominating the sports right from the 1990s until the mid-2000s alone, but also for his good looks, fashion sense, and raising kids who are fast taking over from where he stopped. Ever since he turned pro in the year 1986, Agassi has never failed to impress the tennis community both as a player and coach. The accomplished American tennis player hung his racket in 2006 and eventually took to tennis coaching in 2017. So far, he has been amazing and has also proved to be an asset and a major influence on many budding players.
The former No. 1 tennis player was born on the American soil, precisely in Las Vegas, Nevada, on 29th April 1970, to Emmanuel “Mike” Agassi (father) and Elizabeth “Betty” Agassi (mother), a breast cancer survivor. After his birth, his parents named him Andre Kirk Agassi. His father gave him the middle name “Kirk” after his Armenian American billionaire friend, who he met sometime in 1963 while working as a waiter at Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. The retired tennis star is the last child of his parents. The names of his older siblings are Rita (who was the wife of legendary American tennis player Pancho Gonzales from 1984 to 1989), Tami Agassi (sister), and Philip Agassi (brother).
Andre, at the age of thirteen, was enrolled at Nick Bollettieri’s Tennis Academy in Florida to hone his tennis skills. At the time, his father had the money to keep him in the Academy for only three months but after watching the tennis star play for thirty minutes, Bollettieri changed his mind and asked Andre’s father to take back his check and forget about paying a dime for his son. A year before this incident, precisely at the age of twelve, Andre Agassi competed and emerged the winner of the 1982 National Indoor 14s Double Championship which took place in Chicago. He recorded the victory along with his long-term friend doubles teammate Roddy Parks.
Agassi is said to have dropped out of school in the ninth grade. He has an autobiography captioned: ‘Open’.
Andre Agassi’s Father
It’s natural for sons to dote on their fathers, but when you have a father who is a professional entertainer or athlete, you really have something to aspire to. Like most sons who followed in their dad’s footsteps, Andre Agassi owes the success he has achieved in the tennis world to his father who was once his coach. Greatly inspired by his father’s expertise in the sports, he hung around him from childhood and eventually took to the same profession at the right time. As you already know, the Agassi family has a long history in athleticism – tennis, and boxing, to be precise.
Andre’s father was born Emmanuel B. Aghassian, in Salmas, Persian Empire, on the 25th of December, 1930. According to records, his name was Anglicized as Emmanuel “Mike” Agassi by one of his ancestors to avoid persecution at the time because he was brought up in a Christian home in Tehran. He is a former boxer born to a Ukrainian Armenian father from Kiev called David Agassi, and a Turkish Armenian mother.
Emmanuel developed a strong interest in tennis after he came across American and British servicemen, who taught him the game. As a boxer, he engaged in combat fight as an Iran representative at the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympics. The elder Agassi, who was trained by iconic Polish-German boxer Hans Ziglarski, however, lost in the first round both times.
Andre’s dad officially changed his name to “Mike Agassi” in the year 1952 when he moved to Chicago with his brother called Samuel. A father of four responsible children, Emmanuel met his wife, Elizabeth Dudley, through a mutual friend shortly after he graduated from Roosevelt University, which is located in Chicago, Illinois. They got married on August 19, 1959, at a Methodist church in Chicago’s North Side and later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada after Agassi landed a job as a waiter at the Tropicana Hotel. At the time, their first child, Rita Agassi was two years old while their first son, Philip (born 1962) was just eight days old. Dudley and her husband had their third child, a daughter called Tamara (Tami) Agassi was in 1967 while their second son/last child (Andre) was born in 1970.
The Iranian former tennis coach/boxer, who currently lives in Las Vegas, in the U.S, has an autobiography titled: The Agassi Story. It was published in the year 2004.
Before quitting the sports he loves so much in 2006, Andre Agassi recorded a whopping $31.2 million in career earnings. As of 2018, his net worth is estimated at $175 million, making him of wealthiest tennis stars of all time.
