Amanda Pays is an English actress who was born on 6th June 1959 in London, England, to Jan and Howard Pays. As an 8-year-old girl, her parents sent her off to study at a nearby convent school for girls, it was there that Amanda began trying out acting in her school theatre group. Being that she has a throaty voice, she was often cast in male roles which she aptly played perfectly. At the suggestion of her mother, she sent a Polaroid of herself to a modelling company which saw her get a chance to work with them. Immediately after her high school, she began working with the coy as a model.
For 4 years, starting at the age of 17, Pays travelled the world with the modelling outfit, taking shots at various choice locations with A-list photographers like Terence Donovan, John Swannell, David Bailey, Mathew Rolston, Steven Meisel, and many others. At this time, Amanda Pays graced the cover of many magazines like Tatler, Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and Harpers and Queen. However, despite the perks that came with her job as a model, Pays didn’t find complete fulfilment in what she was doing. She reportedly described it as “clotheshorsing” and wanted to explore other areas of the arts. With this on her mind, she readily turned to what she has always seen her parents do – acting.
Being poised on what she wanted to pursue next in her life; 22 at the time, Amanda Pays enrolled at London’s Academy of Live and Recorded Arts where she studied intensively before making her first film debut. She starred with George Segal in an HBO movie titled Cold Room. From this first acting project in 1984, Amanda earned another role as Lady Victoria Wingate in Oxford Blues, Nikki South in Minder on the Orient Express, all in the same year.
The actress from then onward grew her career with roles in a myriad of films and television series some of which include The Frog Prince (1987), Leviathan (1989), Subterfuge (1996), Ablaze (2001) and My Mistress (2016) – which are all film projects. Amanda Pays is the daughter of a talent agent and former actor Howard Pays and his wife Jan (nee Miller) who is also an actress but now retired. Howard died on the 12th of April 2002 but while he lived, he was known to have co-founded the London based CCA talent agency with Freddy Vale. He began his acting career in 1955 with the role of Bill Norton, and it was while working on the set of this television series that he met his eventual wife Jan Miller and mother of their only known daughter Amanda Pays. Not much has been documented about Jan other than her being listed as an actress.
Amanda’s marital life, just like her career and that of her parents, have revolved much around the film industry. She has been married twice both to actors with her first marriage ending in divorce while the second one is still waxing strong. The actress was first married to the production manager of Pirates of the Caribbean – Peter Kohn the son of producer John Kohn from 1984 till 1987.
Following the end of her first marriage for reasons that have not been ascertained, she got married to Corbin Bernsen, the son of The Young and the Restless actress Jeanne Cooper who is also an actor.
