5 Interesting Facts You Need To Know About Jerry Reed – The American Singer

Many artists have passed on but posterity will always remember them as the ancestral legends of the entertainment industry. One of such icons of entertainment was country singer Jerry Reed whose stint in both music and acting on the small and big screens will forever remain green in the memory of lovers of entertainment all over the world.

The singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actor made appearances in over 12 movies. As a singer, he released hit songs like When You’re Hot, You’re Hot, which earned him a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male. Other notable songs include; Guitar Man, A Thing Called Love, Amos Moses, U.S. Male, Alabama Wild Man, East Bound and Down, Ko-Ko Joe as well as Lord, Mr. Ford. Reed’s induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame came on the 24th of October 2017.

Jerry Reed’s Bio

Reed was born on March 20, 1973, in Atlanta, Georgia as the second child of Cynthia and Robert Hubbard who earned their living as workers on a cotton mill. When Reed was four months old, his parents separated and consequently, he spent seven years in an orphanage along with his sister. Later in 1944, his mother who had gotten married for the second time came back for him and his sister.

The veteran entertainer had always wanted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry and so, spent his years at O’Keefe High School, Atlanta, Georgia, writing lyrics and strumming his guitar. As a matter of fact, the legendary artist did not complete his high school education, as the option of touring with the Texas Troubadours and Faron Young was too strong to resist. Reed had to make the decision to quit school and follow his dreams of becoming a star.

His debut record titled If the Good Lord’s Willing and the Creek Don’t Rise was released after he was signed on by Bill Lowery – a known record producer, as well as a publisher at Capitol Records. He later joined Bill’s National Recording Corporation where he made recordings for NRC. The famed artist spent a couple of years in the military before moving to Nashville to continue his career in entertainment.

His Love Life

Reed was married for 49 years to his lifelong sweetheart Priscilla “Prissy” Mitchell. Priscilla was part of the Appalachians – a folk music group. The duo tied the knot in 1959 and their union endured until the demise of the famous artist. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters named; Charlotte Elaine Hubbard fondly called Lottie, born in October 1970, and Seidina Ann Hubbard born in April 1960. His daughters gave him a couple of grandchildren.

His Demise

The country singer passed on at the age of 71. He died on the 1st of September 2008 in Nashville, Tennessee, as a result of complications from emphysema. During their debut at the Grand Ole Opry, The Road Hammers, a Canadian Country Rockersband paid tribute to the great artist in their performance of East Bound and Down.

Rick Makenzie also wrote a tribute to him which was published in the Vintage Guitar Magazine. Reed was survived by his family members which include his wife and two daughters. Six years after his death, his wife died at the age of 73 on the 24th of September 2014 following a brief illness.

Reed has three albums to his credit, they include; Me and Jerry, Smokey and the Bandit and Me & Chet. Some of his notable movies are; Smokey and the Bandit and the sequels Smokey and the Bandit 2 and 3, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed: In Concert, Concrete Cowboys, The Waterboy, The Survivors, High-Ballin‘, Bat*21, W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings, and Hot Stuf.

Nominations and Awards

During his lifetime, the legendary artist bagged a good number of awards and nominations from his work in music as well as acting. A few of his awards include; a couple of Grammy Awards, one for Best Country Instrumental Performance and the other for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. His People’s Choice Award came in the category of Favorite Supporting Actor in a Motion. Jerry Reed also won Country Music Association Award for Instrumentalist of the Year.

Coming to his nominations, he was a four-time nominee for Country Music Association Awards for Entertainer of the Year, Single of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year. He was also nominated for the Academy of Country Music Awards in the category of Song of the Year.
