5 Important Facts You Need To Know About ‘The Crown’ Season 3

From its relatively accurate portrayal of history, the impeccable cinematography, the ensemble cast of some of the best actors in the industry to the smooth direction and production, Netflix’s historical series, The Crown, has seized the attention of fans since it premiered on November 4, 2016. The first season performed so well that they did not hesitate to release the second season in December 2017. Both seasons have received praise and recognition not only from fans and critics but also from award bodies like Screen Actors Guild Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards, among several others. The plot of the show follows the affairs of the royal family, specifically the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The Crown season 3 will soon be released and here are some facts you need to know about it.

5 Important Facts You Need To Know About The Crown Season 3

1. What is its Premiere Date?

The Crown season 3 is expected to premiere on November 17, 2019. Unlike the second season which was released only a year after the first season, Netflix and the production companies kept eager fans of the show waiting for almost two long years before announcing the premiere date of season 3. This is despite the fact that the show’s renewal for a third and fourth season had been announced since January 2018, just months after the second season was released. The upcoming third season took eight months to film, beginning in July 2018 until February 2019 when the filming was concluded.

2. New Sets Of Actors Are Being Cast

In order to maintain the originality that the show has come to be known for, the producers decided that new sets of actors will be cast after every two seasons as the timeline progresses and the characters grow older. Lesser shows would have probably adopted makeup as the way to go but that is not the way of The Crown. As a result of this, some of the main characters will now be portrayed by relatively older actors rather than the former actors reprising their roles.

3. Who Will Replace Who?

The multiple-award-winning Olivia Colman will be replacing the incredibly talented Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, a role which earned the latter an Emmy. Tobias Menzies would be taking over the role of Prince Philip from the sensational Matt Smith, although it is quite hard to imagine someone that isn’t Smith portraying the Duke of Edinburgh. However, if there is anyone that can pull it off, it is the Outlander and Game of Thrones alum, Tobias Menzies.

Matt Smith was initially supposed to be replaced by MCU favorite, Paul Bettany but Bettany had to drop out of the show due to time schedule issues. Veteran English actress, Helena Bonham Carter will take over as Princess Margaret, a role that had been previously played by Hobbs & Shaw star, Vanessa Kirby. Marion Bailey and Ben Daniels will also be replacing Victoria Hamilton and Matthew Goode as Queen Mother and Antony Armstrong-Jones respectively.

4. New Actors And Characters Will Come On Board In The Crown Season 3

The BAFTA-Award winning titular actor of The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, Jason Watkins, joined the cast of the third season in May 2018 to play the role of Prime Minister Harold. Les Misérables’ Erin Doherty was confirmed to be coming on board as Prince Philip and the Queen’s only daughter, Princess Anne, in June, and her Les Misérables co-star Josh O’Connor was cast as Prince Charles the following month.

Although the upcoming third season will introduce prominent figures like the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Shand and Princess of Wales, Lady Diana Spencer, Lady Diana will not make an appearance on the show until the fourth season but Camilla Shand will, albeit briefly, and she will be portrayed by Killing Eve actress, Emerald Fennell.
