While core fans of the Divergent film series will describe it as one that has held down their attention and has been quite enthralling critics would beg to differ. The series is an adaptation of Veronica Roth’s trilogy novels titled Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant. The first film was directed by Neil Burger while Robert Schwentke directed the second and third film. More than a couple of years since the release of the last film in the series, fans and critics alike are asking if we will get to see a 4th Divergent Movie. Find out all we know below.
The Divergent Series
In 2014, we were visited with the first film in the series, under the title of Divergent. While it recorded its fair share of commercial success, it dragged its feet based on critical reviews as opinions were divided about it. The next film in the installment, The Divergent Series: Insurgent was released in 2015. Again, it took home mixed reviews which was more negative than positive and it also made less in Box office returns compared to the first film in the series. The downward movement of the film continued with the third film in the trilogy, The Divergent Series: Allegiant.
With this, moviegoers have maintained a strong silence on seeing a 4th Divergent film. While the franchise did not have so much going for it, it still had a rather good story that is set in a futuristic dystopian society where people over the ages of 16 are put in factions based on their virtues. This division according to personality is a way of preventing the society from falling into the chaos that brought an end to the United States.
The main character- Tris realizes that she is divergent and doesn’t fit into any of the groups. She has to hide this or else she dies. She befriends and becomes romantically involved with Four who teaches her how to survive. They then set out to find out why the Divergents are hunted and killed.
The movie featured several upcoming young actors helping them establish their acting careers. Some of them include Shailene Woodley (as Tris) and Theo James (as Four) in lead characters. Actors like Zoe Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Kate Winslet and Miles Teller had supporting roles.
Is there going to be a 4th Divergent movie or is Allegiant the last one?
As stated, the series has not got the best of reactions from critics since it began with each successive film rating lower than its predecessor. While some believe the screenwriters’ dwindling loyalty to the original source material might be responsible for this, some believe the story itself isn’t rich enough to be made into a successful movie as the stories and plot are disjointed.
Moreover, there was a general outrage when the main character died in a nonsensical manner. Fans got really upset about this and swore to boycott the movie. Another reason that might have ended the series is the box office success. Domestically, each of the films did badly than its predecessor. The first film on the series grossed $288 million worldwide, the second beat the record minimally with a $297 million gross. The third in the series then grossed $179 million.
With their minimal successes in the box office, it seems like a no brainer to continue with the next installment in the series. Although an official date (March 2017) was announced for the release of a 4th Divergent movie, it was canceled and producers considered making the fourth a television film, adding new cast members and then using it as a spin-off for another series beyond the book.
This idea too never saw the light of the day due to the reluctance of the main cast to feature in the television series. They maintained that according to the contract they signed, all the movies have to be theatrically released. By December 2018, it was announced by Starz and Lionsgate that they were no longer working on the TV series due to lack of interest by the cast and network executives.
From all indications, there might never be a fourth film in the Divergent series. This lack of closure has enraged the fans of the series. Even the lead actress Shailene Woodley has expressed her disappointment about how things ended. She became disillusioned by this and almost quit acting altogether.
With a total gross of close to $800 million under its belt and no major award win, the Divergent Series seems to have come to an embarrassing and inconclusive end.
