In a time and age where inclusion is everything, and different organizations are trying to do their best to appeal to people from every facet of existence, humans from all over the globe appear to have aspects of them represented very well on the global stage. Internet streaming media provider, Netflix, is one of the organizations doing their fair share to make sure their platform is inclusive by making sure it has content that comes from all over the globe and not just from its primary market – the United States. From Australia to Mexico, Brazil, and Italy, Netflix has content to satisfy everyone’s need.
On the 1st of December 2017, the platform looked to satisfy its German audience, which as of 2019 accounts for 5.2 million of its worldwide 139 million subscribers. Netflix debuted its first German-language original series, Dark, a science fiction thriller that many have compared to another Netflix original series, the award-winning Stranger Things. Will there be a 3rd Season of Dark? Let’s find out together.
The Premise of Dark
Dark, which is set in the fictional town of Winden, Germany, explores the implications of time and its effects on human nature. The story unravels following the mysterious disappearance of children in the city which then brings to light the secrets, as well as the fractured and hidden relationships of four families that reside there. The main characters of the show are teenager Jonas Kahnwald who is struggling to cope with his father’s suicide, police chief Charlotte Doppler, and police officer Ulrich Nielsen whose brother disappeared three decades earlier.
In the first season of the show, a few members of the four main families; the Kahnwalds, Nielsens, Dopplers, and Tiedemanns grow aware of the existence of a wormhole that allows them to time-travel. Secrets of these families are later brought to light, thus causing their lives to crumble as the children of the town begin to disappear.
The second season continues as the families discover how much intertwined they are as they also fight to reunite with their missing loved ones. New aspects to the mysteries of the families are also further revealed, including that of a major force (the secret Sic Mundus fellowship) in an underlying battle for the ultimate fate of the people of Winden. As the season draws to an end, the supposed destruction of Winden and death of its inhabitants is expected from an apocalypse.
Will There Be A 3rd Season of Dark?
Despite a television show appearing to have gained a huge following, many of them are usually scrapped by their networks for reasons that will not make any sense to a fan. Due to this, many fans of the German language show have been wondering if Dark will face the same fate or whether it would be back for a 3rd season.
We can confirm that Dark has been recommissioned for a 3rd season by Netflix. The platform ordered another season of the show after its second season which was released on the 21st of June 2019 received critical acclaim. Filming for the 3rd season of Dark subsequently commenced a few days later, in June 2019.
Is The 3rd Season Going To Be The Last?
Dark, which was awarded the 2018 Grimme-Preis award will be coming to an end after its eight-episode 3rd season. While this is not a piece of pleasant news for fans of the show, they need not worry as creators have promised a fitting end to the existential thriller. Dark co-creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, who said that they originally conceived the show as a trilogy, promised to offer answers to all the questions that viewers have been asking while helping to untangle the story through time. New cast members are further expected to join the show.
As was the case with the previous two seasons of the series, Friese serves as the writer of all episodes of season three while Odar will be directing. Nikolaus Summerer will work as the cinematographer while W&B Television returns as the producer of the show. All things being equal, the 3rd Season of Dark would offer an exciting plot.
