When Angelina Jolie Voigt began acting, she dropped her last name because she did not want her rise to be linked to her father, the famous and Academy Award-winning actor Jon Voight. Many years later, she is considered one of the most popular and best actresses in the world with 2 Oscars, 3 Golden Globes, and many other awards to show for a career that has over 50 movies and TV shows all grossing over $2 billion dollars.
Although she is more famous as a film actress, Jolie is also a voice actress, filmmaker, and humanitarian. Ever wondered what her best movies are?
Angelina Jolie Movies and TV Shows
1. Girl, Interrupted (1999)
This is not the greatest movie you will find by any means, but somehow, Angelina Jolie was able to pull out a sensational performance that earned her an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
She took the role of a sociopath (Lisa Rowe), who has been in the mental institution since she was 9. Although very respected and looked up to by other patients, she is very rebellious. The movie centers on her relationship with Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder) who is the lead character.
2. Gia (1998)
Among other Angelina Jolie movies and TV shows, this stands out because it is probably the work that first brought her out as a serious actress to reckon with in 1998, the same year George Wallace, another of her great film, was released.
This time around, Jolie is the supermodel Gia Marie Carangi whose fast rise to fame also becomes her doom as she is now dying young at the age of 26 due to the AIDS she contracted due to her life of drugs and wrong decisions.
This HBO TV film that earned her a Golden Globe Awards also became the reason why many first fell in love with her as an actress.
3. Changeling (2008)
A Clint Eastwood directed mystery crime drama film, we see Jolie appearing as Christine Collins, a single mother whose son has gone missing. It is discovered that the child was kidnapped by a serial killer but the police rescue and return a different child to her. As she protests, she is told she is unfit to be a mother and so she is now institutionalized.
The drama which is based on a historical event is probably one of her most challenging roles but at the same time, one of her most successful.
4. A Mighty Heart (2007)
This film did not win any major award for Jolie, but the debate on whether it is the greatest movie she has ever made still sustains.
Angelina takes the role of a Mariana Pearl, the pregnant wife of Daniel Pearl (Dan Futterman) who has gone to Pakistan but cannot be found again. Based on real-life events that happened in 2002, Mariana is now looking to find her husband.
5. Maleficent (2014)
Since 2011, Angelina Jolie did not appear in any movie until 2014 when she came as Maleficent in this movie which she also produced. She is an evil fairy who places a curse on an infant but now realizes, she may have to count on the infant for peace in the land that is troubled.
With $758.5 million in the Box office, this is her highest grossing movie.
6. Wanted (2008)
Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) an account manager, realizes that his father who is now deceased was a member of a fraternity and he was a professional assassin who had some superhuman killing abilities. His life is on the line and so he has to depend on Fox (Jolie) to keep him alive and mentor him so as to develop the killing abilities he shares with his late father.
A Mark Millar Kick-Ass adaptation, Wanted is just one among the many other Angelina Jolie Movies in which she does everything right, bringing in sexiness into the action thriller. And yes, many are still hoping she returns for the sequel.
7. Salt (2010)
What Jolie succeeded doing in this movie is to show that the successes of her previous action roles were not just some fluke. She takes the role of Evelyn Salt who leaves her audience to find out what side she belongs to, the U.S or Russia. One of the most memorable things about this movie is not only that Jolie turned up with intense stunts but also that she performed all of it on her own.
8. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
For those that have come to love the action thriller movies of Angelina Jolie, this is very significant because it is actually her birth into the genre. Based on the game with the same name, this movie has Jolie as Lara Croft who finds herself in an Egyptian tomb where she goes in pursuit of a diamond. Now she has a lot to battle, both to remain alive and to have the diamond she is looking for.
9. Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)
This is yet another movie that will not rear its head among best movies on any list, but among Angelina Jolie movies to remember, it will always come up. That is not because of the scandal that arose from it when Brad Pitt left his then-wife Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie whom he later married.
Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie) and her husband, John Smith (Brad Pitt) seem to be leading normal lives until it comes out that they are both assassins and it’s time to take out each other.
10. The Bone Collector (1999)
There is hardly a way for an actor not to stay woke when you are acting beside Denzel Washington. Not to suggest Angelina has not always delivered, but in The Bone Collector which is a psychological thriller film, a combined effort between the two greats delivers on something amazing.
Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie) is a young police officer who is attached to Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) who is one of the smartest forensics experts around. Now the two have a very big mystery case to solve as a killer is out there.
11. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
In this science fiction action-adventure film, New York faces yet another attack but this time around it is some giant flying robots that are carrying out the attack. Featuring other stars like Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie who features as Commander Francesca Cook (Franky), is in charge of a Royal Navy flying aircraft carrier against the robots.
Although she took the role after she just returned from shooting Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003), she did well to her part in the work which at the end of the day won her a People’s Choice Awards as well as a nomination for a Saturn Awards.
12. Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)
There is no gainsaying that Angelina Jolie has found herself acting in some movies that were not so good in the past. This is one. However, just as almost always, she has managed to pull a good one together with Nicolas Cage.
In this action heist film which was directed by Dominic Sena, Sara “Sway” Wayland (Angelina Jolie) is a car thief who along with Memphis Raines (Nicolas Cage) and other members of their team have to steal as much as fifty luxurious cars in order to save the life of the brother of Memphis who had a car stealing job go wrong for him and now has been kidnapped.
With almost everything else wrong with the movie, the two things it recorded are its financial success and the performance of cage and Jolie which got the actress a Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.
13. Playing By Heart (1998)
This is yet another of the very few comedy-drama films of Angelina Jolie. This movie tells its story rather different from others as it takes different couples with their different love stories. You will find Jolie (Joan) who is in a relationship with Ryan Phillippe (Keenan) a man she meets in a nightclub. Just like others in the film, the couple is trying to find its way through love in Los Angeles.
14. George Wallace (1997)
Surprisingly enough, this is one of the most underrated and often forgotten Angelina Jolie movies, although she turned up with a great performance as Cornelia Wallace which earned her the first Golden Globe Awards she won as well as an Emmy Awards nomination.
It is a biographical film that tells the story of George Wallace, the former governor of Alabama as directed by John Frankenheimer. While Gary Sinise takes the role of George, Jolie takes the role of his wife, Cornelia Wallace.
15. Hackers (1995)
As a movie, not too many people really loved Hackers but somehow, Jolie who is one of the lead characters got her job done even as this is one of her earliest movies.
She appears as Kate Libby in the crime movie which centers on high school students who are into hacking and extortion. For Jolie and others, it began as something very little but they cannot tell how far it will all go.
