Notable Netflix television series, 13 Reasons Why is quite popular in most parts of the United States of America and the world at large. The teen drama series which was created by Brian Yorkey is based on Jay Asher’s 2007 novel titled Thirteen Reasons Why.

The first season of the widely acclaimed series was released on March 31, 2017, on Netflix. Rotten Tomatoes gave the debut season an approval rating of 79% which is based on 62 critical reviews. Plot

The storyline of 13 Reasons Why revolves around Clay Jensen, a 17-year old high school student, and his friend, Hannah Baker, who commits suicide. Hannah took her life after she couldn’t cope any longer with the incessant bullying and sexual assault she faced in high school. Jensen, shortly after his friend’s death, discovers a box of cassette recordings made by Hannah weeks before her intended suicide, detailing the reasons why she decided to take her own life.

Netflix recruited an array of talented Hollywood actors and actresses to properly portray the series. Dylan Minnette played the Clay Jensen character while Katherine Langford starred as Hannah Baker. Following the latter’s performance in the series debut season, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

13 Reasons Why Wasn’t Supposed To Be A TV Show

It may interest you to know that 13 Reasons Why was not initially planned for television. In February 2011, Universal Pictures set out to produce a film based on Jay Asher’s novel but dropped the project in favor of a planned television series by Netflix. The first season which began development in October 2015 was released on March 31, 2017.

The Journey So Far

The American series received some positive reviews from audiences and critics who praised the performances of the actors and actresses, especially that of Langford and Minnette. Netflix went ahead to renew 13 Reasons Why for a second season in May 2017 and by December that same year, filming was completed.

The second season was premiered on May 18, 2018, alongside a video that featured the cast cautioning viewers on some of the disturbing topics mentioned in the series. Barely a month after the release of the second season, Netflix ordered the development of a third season. Season three of 13 Reasons Why was released on Netflix on August 23, 2019.
